mar 22, 1837 - Dred Scott vs Sanford

Description:

Dred Scott, who had been living in Illinois, a free state, for 10 years, tried to sue for his independence, stating that his residence in a free territory made him a free man. this case went all the way to the Supreme Court where the Supreme Court ruled that Dred Scott could not sue for his independence, because he was not a citizen of the United States, as all slaves weren't, and therefore he couldn't have been a citizen of a free state.
