Description: Thomas Jefferson purchased 827,000 square miles of land from France in North America for $15 million, even though there was no clause in the Constitution allowing him to do so as President.
Causes: As more of the United States became interested in the idea of westward expansion, Thomas Jefferson saw a deal to increase the size of the US.
Impact: The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States, and only fueled more westward expansion for the rest of the century.
