jan 28, 2018 - Kendrick Lamar Wins Grammy for 'Best Rap Album" for DAMN.
Description:
In his 2018 win for ‘Best Rap Album’ Kendrick once again mentions God first. He leans into the microphone and says, “God on top, always” (Grammys, 2018). You can tell that with each win, he references the contribution that God has made in his life, but more specifically in his work. Winning ‘Best Rap Album’ is not unfamiliar territory for him, but you can tell this was a still a special win for him. He tells the audience about how rap and hip-hop has affected his life. That it has given him the platform to support his family and hone his craft. At a younger age, he thought that this genre revolved around the "awards, accolades, money, woman and cars" (Grammys 2018). However after three massive albums and shelfs of awards, he states what rap is truly about, the artistry. He understands that his role in rap should be to honor the greats and the legends, but also bring about a new generation of rap, that sheds like on the social injustices of our modern time. He shouts out Snoop Dog, Jay-Z, Nas and 2Pac, for the contributions they have made to rap music as a whole.
