Hiram Revels was a African American born free in North Carolina who later became an eloquent pastor and founded schools for black children. He was also the first black man to be elected to the United States Congress. This too was a monumental moment during reconstruction, for it gave African Americans even more hope for the future, as people like them were gaining more power in the States.
