oct 18, 1492 - Christophorus Columbus makes landfall in the Caribbean Castrum Ciriacum is founded

Description:

Sponsored by the Roman state, roman explorer Christophorus Columbus sets out in july of 1492 from Ostia, making landfall on Quisqueya, a large island inhabited by the Taino people, on October 18. Facing little if any hostility from the Taino, the Trierarch (Captain) accompanying Columbus, Ciriacus Durantis, establishes trade with the Taino and chooses to stay on the island and establish a Roman fort, Castrum Ciriacum, which becomes the first permanent european settlement in the New World. Columbus returns to Rome to share the news with the Senate.
