jan 17, 1781 - Battle of Cowpens

Description:

This battle was a turning point in the Southern's war efforts. General Daniel Morgan took 300 riflemen and 700 minutemen and attacked the British back country fort named Ninety Six. Meanwhile General Charles Cornwallis dispatched 1,100 redcoats to secure the fort. Morgan told his troops to skirmish but leave after firing two rounds. Cornwallis mistook this as retreat but his troops were met with heavy fire and cavalry charge. Morgans army destroyed the British, they killed, captured, and wounded 800 redcoats, while the Americans suffered less than 100 casualties.
