dec 10, 1801 - Napoleon Builds an Empire
Description:
Napoleon wanted to control the rest of Europe and to reassert French power in the Americas. However, after the failure of the expedition to Saint Domingue, Napoleon decided to end his quest for American Territory. He offered to sell all of the Louisiana Territory to the United States for $15 million. This became known as the Louisiana Purchase. Napoleon gave up ambitions in the New World and turned his attention to Europe. Napoleon’s battlefield successes forced the rulers of Austria, Prussia, and Russia to sign peace treaties. These successes also enabled him to build a massive European empire. By 1812, almost all of Europe was under Napoleon’s control. The only areas of Europe free from his power were Britain, Portugal, Sweden, and the Ottoman Empire.
