Emily offered her regrets on behalf of her late father’s business and social interests, to the wife of Henry Fearing, hat factory owner, shortly following the fire on April 23rd that destroyed both factories. “We hope you are not too much fatigued with the alarm of last Night, and rejoice that your beautiful Home was unharmed. The regret my father would offer, please accept from his Children.” We might wonder whether good nature motivated her mostly, crediting her father as a sort of social shield or attention deflector, or how upper/middle-class dynamics may have directed concern towards a certain responsibility from one woman to another - with little written contact prior - to send well wishes after the widespread news.
