The hostage crisis went on for well over a year and was one of the US's biggest issues at the time. But in 1981, within minutes of Ronald Reagan's inauguration as president, they were released. The crisis had been created by student groups who occupied the American embassy in Tehran. These groups were supported by Khomeini and that is a major reason for the friction between Iran and the US.
