Description - The U.S. bought the Louisiana Territory from France (around 828000 square miles) for 15 million dollars. This doubled the size of the U.S.
Causes - Napoleon needed to gain money to fund his wars in Europe. He got this money by selling the Louisiana Territory. The U.S. also wanted the territory to gain more farming land and opportunities for trade.
Historical impact - Gave the U.S. control of the Mississippi River and the Port of New Orleans. Important for farmers who used water transportation to ship their crops. This was also a major component of achieving the goal of Manifest Destiny.
