may 11, 1868 - 14th Amendment
Description:
As reconstruction continued, Republicans in congress wished to suppress Black oppression further. To combat this they granted all men born in the U.S. as citizens with the intention of giving former slaves who have lived in the country for generations citizenship. This lead to increased opportunities for many Blacks in the economic, political, and social spheres.
