Description:
Following the Civil War, a period of reconstruction began to reintegrate the former Confederacy in the Union. Radical Republicans took charge of congress with goals to promote greater freedom and equalities to Blacks. This amendment formally ended slavery in all parts of the United States, not just the states of rebellion. However, many Blacks were still oppressed through forms of sharecropping which limited their economic oppertunites.Added to timeline:
