jan 28, 1850 - Compromise of 1850
Description:
After acquisitions from the Mexican American war, the debate over the presence of slavery in new territories was highly argued. This compromise was placed to hopefully ease tensions between the North and South. The 5 points were that Texas had to surrender land to New Mexico, California became a free state, popular sovereignty was practiced in new territories, a stronger fugitive slave law was passed, and the slave trade was banned in DC. Ultimately this legislations was not enough to stop the impending civil war.
