Description:

- It was the break up of the Church into two parts = Western Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church.
- Political cause = the splitting of the Roman Empire to west and east
- Linguistic cause = In the West, they spoke Latin
meanwhile in the East they spoke Greek
- The Eastern Orthodox Church disagreed on the changes that the Roman Catholic Church made on the Nicene Creed (statement of faith)
- Roman Catholic Church = "We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,"
- Eastern Orthodox Church = "We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father,"
- They disagreed with "and the Son" because they believed it was non-canonical (not relevant)
- They also had disagreements when discussing over who the Balkan area belonged to
