Following the 2009 presidential election, where fundamentalist candidate Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won over reformist candidate Mir
Hossein Mousavi, and political protests broke out calling for removal of Ahmadinejad. The protests were led by reformists, meaning they were attempting to blend the tenets of Islam with the complexities of the modern world. The tension concluded with the election of reformist candidate Hassan Rouhani in 2013, which may lead to more reformist lawmakers in Iran's future.
