may 30, 1854 - Kansas Nebraska Act

Description:

Description: The Kansas Nebraska Act was passed allowing people in Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves to allow slavery or not within the territoriy's borders(popular sovereignty).
Causes: Initially this act was to open up land for many farms and make the Midwestern Transcontinental Railroad possible.
Historical Impact: Later, popular sovereignty would lead pro- and anti-slavery elements to flood Kansas to cast the vote for or against slavery in the territory, playing into Bleeding Kansas. Disatisfaction with the repeal of the Missouri Compromise of 1820 further flamed the flames of conflicts between the north and south.
