The discovery of gold on the American River in California led to a huge boom in immigration west. More that 80,000 people made the trip west hoping to find gold and become rich. This time was later referred by historians as California Gold Rush. Both Americans and foreigners moved westward, drastically increasing the population of an uninhabited area. This was a large step in westward expansion, further increasing the United States power.
