Description:

The Compromise of 1850 prevented the expansion of slavery when there was territorial expansion. It also strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act, which made people in the North get and return slaves that escaped and return them to their owners. It did decrease the hostilities between the North and South, but it did not stop all of it. This contributed to the Civil War because it conflicted the North and South over the topic of slavery and where it would be and how it would be handled.
