Missouri was wanting to be a slave state which sparked a lot of controversy within the rest of the rest of the states. The overall compromise was that one state would be admitted into the Union as a slave state and one as a free states. Missouri would be the slave state and Main would be a free state. This was done to keep the balance between free and slave states. This compromise also created the territorial line that would separate the North and South as free and slave states. This meant that there would be no slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of 36 degrees 30 minutes latitude. This contributed to the Civil War because it started the increase on the division between the North and South.
