Square deal for labor - (1902) Penn coal miner strike, 140k imm workers exploited; Miners demanded for 20% increase in pay, reduction of working hours from 10 → 9; Coal didn’t supply houses/schools/hospitals w/ coal for approaching winter; TR calls both parties to White House, neither side would acquiesce;

TR used big strick to sort out prob, Threatened to seize mines & operate them w/ fed troops, Compromise give miners 10% pay boost, 9-hour workday, union not recognized as bargaining agent
