(1911) Triangle Shirtwaist Company in NYC had locked doors, fire killed 146 workers; Most killed were young imm women, in violation of fire codes; Caused public outcry, had massive strike by women in needle trades; NY legis passed stronger laws regulating hours & conditions;
Other legis followed suit, by 1917 30 states had workers’ compensation laws; Provided insurance to workers injured in industrial accidents; Concept of employer’s responsibility to society replacing idea of unregulated enterprise
