Editors financed research, encouraged quarrelsome writing by writers. had lots of circulation, most scandalous exposures published as best-selling books; Lots of targets for muckrakers - like insurance companies, tariff lobbies, beef trust, “money trust”, RR barons, amassing of Amer fortunes; mostly aimed at social evils; signified much of progressive reform mvmt, Didn’t call for drastic political change, wanted to right social wrongs, counted on publicity, aroused public conscience, Wanted to cleanse capitalism, emphasize democracy
