During the time the US-Mexico border was more open, a procedure was done to try and control the spread of body lice that caused typhus. Mexicans would be required to strip down, be shaved and forced to take gasoline baths, particularly noxious things. One woman, 17 year old Carmelita Torres refused though and she led a bus full of women coming to work in the US to riot against the authorities. Unfortunately it did little to stop the procedures in the future though Carmelita is considered an role model for her actions.
