dec 12, 1845 - Phytophtyora

Description:

- A plant disease

Transmission: The infectious agent is the mold from the fungus. Usually when roots are in water they can pick up this mold from the fungus and rapidly rot anything it touches (like plants/trees)

Symptoms: The leaves of the plants will appear drought stressed (starved for water) - Trees or plants often wilt and die rapidly w/ first warm weather of the season. Leaves turn dull green, yellow or even reddish or purplish.

Treatment: A tree that has this disease can be saved by removing the soil from around the base of the tree all the way down to the top of the main roots. By cutting away any bark that’s oozy or dark and leaving the root exposed it also has a chance to save the tree. By doing this it can allow the root system to dry completely and slowing the spread of the disease. No chemical treatments are available.

Important Historical Events: Potato blight in Ireland: Caused thousands of people to stave due to all the potatoes becoming ruined from this plant disease. People mostly starved were from poor familiies and didn't have neough money to buy anything else.
