Description:
Types of Typhus:
- Rocky mountain spotted fever: Rickettsia australis bacteria, spread by tick
- Scrub typhus: Orierita tsugamushi bacteria. harvest mites, humans, rodents
- Endemic typhus: Rikettsia typhi bacterium, fleas on rats
- Epidemic Typhus: Rickettsia prowazekki bacteria, spread by body lice. Rickettsia prowazekki lives inside cells, obligate intracellular parasites.
Symptoms: Fevers lasts up to two weeks, headaches, chills, general aches, rash all over body except face. palms, hands, and soles of feet.
Reasons for Body lice: No lice = no typhus, poor hygiene, crowded living conditions
Other names: Jail fever, Hanger fever, Ship Fever
Big History Events: Bath Riots, Texas/Mexico Border Patrol, Armenian Genocide
Treatment/Prevention?: Would spray immigrants with a mixture of kerosene, gasoline, and vinegar (Lead to being very flammable - one spraying building caught fire
and several people died)
