jan 1, 1471 - Mysticism (1471)
Description:
Mysticism offered the idea that an individual, alone and isolated, could commune with God, not needful of the church, the sacraments, or the clergy to experience a relationship with Him. This thinking was very new for the time and even disruptive of the general order of religion; mystics went on to influence Martin Luther and other thinkers. Mysticism is more important than Lay Religion, because mysticism went farther than lay religion did with its doctrine of not needing the church, and unlike lay religion, it never received papal approval.
