jan 1, 1556 - Revolt of Netherlands (1556)
Description:
This war between Spain and the provinces of the Low Country was emblematic of a larger struggle between Protestant and Catholic nations. What started as a fight against Spanish influence turned into independence for a new nation, the Netherlands, and a war which had a large role in the decline of Spain. It also shifted a large commercial center from Antwerp to Amsterdam, surging the Dutch into commercial prominence for centuries. (Palmer 124-126)
