jan 1, 1555 - Peace of Augsburg (1555)
Description:
This peace signified an end to the struggle between the free states and cities of the Protestant northern Holy Roman Empire fighting for their freedom against the Catholic southern part. The northern states, backed by Francis I, were fighting in what was in part a political struggle against the larger southern states backed by the Habsburgs. By this peace the Protestant states were essentially victories and solidified their rights to choose whatever religion their entire kingdom would subscribe to. (Palmer 83-84)
