After his arrest on June 20, 2003 he was brought to court the same day. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing in this case. Briere's lawyers said his client wanted to "spare Holly's family from the pain of hearing detailed evidence of her rape and murder". After June 20, 2003 Michael Briere has been in prison since. The Ontario Superior Court judge on this case was David Watt. He was convicted under section 231(1) and 272(c). Briere's defense lawyer was Gregory W. Leslie.
