feb 18, 1440 - Johann Gutenberg developed the printing press
Description:
The development of the printing press was crucial to the protestant reformation because it allowed new ideas to be spread throughout Europe. Martin Luther used Johann Gutenberg’s invention to be able to spread his writings, such as the ninety-five theses, throughout Europe. The printing press that was invented in 1440 allowed books and other forms of literature to be produced more efficiently and cheaper. This increased literacy and allowed the writings and beliefs of Martin Luther to be spread throughout Europe to challenge the authority of the church.
