Description:
During the reign of Louis XIII who, himself was not particularly skilled as a ruler, Cardinal Richelieu was appointed minister. Richelieu made up for many of Louis XIII’s shortcomings and proved to be an indispensable minister for France. He strengthened the bourbon family’s power and kept the nobles in check. During his time as minister he also took measures to limit the Habsburgs power by involving France in the thirty years war. After his death he was succeeded by Cardinal Mazarin who was the effective ruler during Louis XIV’s childhood.
