Erasmus wrote The Praise of Folly in 1509 which had a widespread and severe backlash. The book is a satire of the stereotypical merchant, scholar and priest. In its conclusion it includes a straightforward statement of the christian ideals. The book lead to an environment in which others would eventually spur on the reformation. The Praise of Folly set forth a new kind of renaissance satire and greatly influenced the religious and scholarly minds of the time.
