may 26, 1588 - British Defeat Philip II’s Spanish Armada: 1588

Description:

The Spanish Armada was a fleet sent to invade England by King Philip II. The fleet consisted of about 130 ships and 19,000 soldiers. The purpose of the invasion was to punish Elizabeth I and Protestant England. The English and Spanish fought several Naval battles, and the Spanish ended up being defeated. The English used heavier long-range cannons during battle and the Spanish lacked the training and supplies. The Spanish Armada’s ships were damaged and only some made it back to Spain. There were many casualties from the battle and the journey home.
