The Spanish Armada was a fleet sent to invade England by King Philip II. The fleet consisted of about 130 ships and 19,000 soldiers. The purpose of the invasion was to punish Elizabeth I and Protestant England. The English and Spanish fought several Naval battles, and the Spanish ended up being defeated. The English used heavier long-range cannons during battle and the Spanish lacked the training and supplies. The Spanish Armada’s ships were damaged and only some made it back to Spain.
