jan 2, 1624 - Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu: 1624
Description:
Louis XIII was the son of Henry IV. He was a weak king, but Cardinal Richelieu made up for all the weakness. Richelieu was Henry IV’s minister, and was able to pursue some of his desires in politics. He wanted to increase the power of the Bourbon Monarchy. To increase the power, he moved against Huguenots or Protestants and tried to make France the strongest state in Europe. He thought that his greatest obstacle in the way of doing this was the Hapsburg rulers. The Hapsburg rulers’ land surrounded France. Richelieu ended up getting France involved in the Thirty Years’ War because he wanted to limit their power.
