feb 8, 1887 - The Dawes Severalty Act of 1887
Description:
This piece of legislature was a large blow to Native Americans and brought assimilation into white society by forcing Natives to settle 160 acres (with an additional 40 acres per dependent). Citizenship was granted to adult owners but the Amerindians were forced into holding the granted lands for 25 years. Children were also taken from parents and indoctrinated in white schools.
