After the war of 1812 in 1815, the South's cotton market exploded due to the worldwide demand now that they were reconnected to European trade. During the war it was very risky due to battles with England, but after they had safe passage for trade. The south's expanded dependance on slave work and plantations helped lead to their secession later on.
