Francis Scott Key wrote the famous poem Star Spangled Banner after witnessing the bombing of a fort in Maryland during the War of 1812. He was inspired to write it after seeing the American flags still standing after the bombs hit. This is an import piece of American patriotism and is one of the first major American pride pieces written.
