On January 31st, 1865, Robert E. Lee was promoted to General-in-Chief of the Confederate forces. This is due to the fact that he was a strong leader, and had helped the confederacy win a lot of battles. This would be short-lived, however, as the Confederacy would be defeated shortly afterwards.
