On March 2, 1864, Ulysses S. Grant became the Lieutenant General of the U.S. army. This was because of his major success in in the Vicksburg Campaign. The Vicksburg Campaign was the Union plot to take over the Mississippi river, cutting off Texas from the rest of the confederacy.
