Description:
The States' Rights Democratic Party was formed as a result of a political schism between the Democratic Party and those who sought to protect states' rights to instill segregation and oppose what they saw to be an oppressive federal government. This group was referred to as the Dixiecrats. Their first and only presidential candidate was Strom Thurmond.
