Description:

Section 1 of the 13th Amendment states, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Approved by President Andrew Johnson, the 13th Amendment was the first of the three Civil War Amendments and was the first significant step in creating a slave-free America.
