He was rich and used a lot of it towards research in his private lab. He did a lot of research on Thallium and was the one who found that element. He did many experiments with the cathode ray tubes which he confirmed the experiments of earlier scientists saying that cathode-rays have a negative charge. He was the first to demonstrate this legitimately and backed the idea of a negative particle in the atom.
