feb 22, 1819 - Adams-Onis Treaty

Description:

There had been lots of conflict in West Florida because of American settlers who rebelled and wanted to declare themselves independent from Spanish rule. Since Spain was already weak from fighting France, Minister Don Luis de Onis met with John Quincy Adams and came to the agreement that Spain would cede East Florida to the United States and withdraw their claim on land in West Florida. It also defined the western boundary of the land acquired through the Louisiana Purchase. As a result, the American frontiers’ safety was secured and the land was expanded. In turn, people felt more powerful and prideful for their growing nation, which was important because it created a united identity.
