sep 11, 1791 - Whiskey Rebellion Starts
Description:
Many Pennsylvania whiskey makers were outraged with Hamilton’s plan which included a heavy tax on whiskey. They responded with riots, eventually taking over the city of Pittsburgh. Washington responded by sending 13,000 troops to end the riots. By the time his men had arrived, the rebels had already returned home. This event was significant because it sent a message to the citizens that change through violence would not be tolerated in the new nation.
