aug 31, 1786 - Shays' Rebellion
Description:
Angered by the unreasonable tax burden placed upon lower class farmers post-war, Daniel Shay and 1200 other angry farmers staged a coup attempting to take control of a federal arsenal in Massachusetts. They were met with government troops, who opened fire on the rebels, who quickly dispersed afterwards. Shays’ Rebellion proved the government needed to address debt, and also showed the danger of true democracy.
