Description:
Lasting from 1800 to 1850, but peaking between 1820 and 1840, the Second Great Awakening emphasized creating "Heaven on Earth" and that free will, not destiny, was the key to Heaven. Camp meetings also made Protestant religion, especially Methodist and Baptist sects, more accessible on the frontier and to women and African Americans. In effect it democratized a person's relationship to God.
