jan 20, 1667 - 'Paradise Lost', John Milton
Description:
Epic poem
Relates Satan's rebellion, god's creation of the world, S's anger at being excluded from the bliss of paradise, Adam and E's fall and their expulsion from Paradise, but with the promise of redemption with Christ. The poem is framed by 2 falls; that of S and of human: JM's aim was to "justify the ways of god to man". JM's hero is Adam/man or Christ. It is a description of S's conflicts, doubts and sufferings, energy and wit (S is at times narrator) that we tend to remember and made him attractive for the Romantics. By comparison, world of heaven seems dull and static. William Blake said "JM was of the Devil's party without knowing it"
