Compromise
Description:
The Missouri Compromise occurred due to an increase in the debate of slavery due to the admittance of Missouri as a state. The issue was that Missouri wanted to be a slave state, but that would cause an imbalance of power. The debate was over power, not slavery.
Two plans were suggested to fix this issue. The Tallmadge Amendment simply wanted for no new slaves to be admitted into Missouri. The New York Proposal proposed that all slaves born in Missouri became free when they turned 25. This passed the House, but not the Senate. Finally, Henry Clay created the Missouri Compromise, which said that Missouri becomes a slave state, Maine seperates from Massachusetts and becomes a free state, all future states admitted from the Louisiana purchase will be decided by the 36° 30 min line. All states to the north of the line are free, and all states south of the line are slave states.
