aug 9, 1848 - Free-Soil Party Forms

Description:

Frederick Douglass

This new political party abandoned some of the ideals of the Garrisonians and the Liberty Party, such as the "sinfulness of slavery and the natural rights of African Americans." Instead, they thought slavery was a threat to "republicanism and the Jeffersonian ideal of a freeholder society".

This party was one of the many political parties that were against the Southern policies of slavery. Since slavery was one of the biggest issues whenever it comes to the civil war, this was just one more thing that urged the fight forward.
