On May 21st, Charles Sumner gave a bitter speech about the crimes going on in Kansas. The next day, Preston thought that Sumner took this speech too far. He barged into the Senate chamber and beaten Sumner. This infuriated the north and fueled the hatred to start more seperation between the north and the south.
